summary: kusuo takes the opportunity to thank y/n for their efforts to make him comfortable.
“I thought I’d find you here.” a voice pipes up from the entrance to the children’s park, soft, not too alarming.
Kusuo looks up from where he’s staring at the ground as he’s sat on the swing, watching the familiar human being he tolerated approach him. He doesn’t say anything, simply observes.
While he would normally excuse himself and leave at the moment someone came to pester him, he didn’t mind you too much, thus, he stayed. He heard your thoughts before you found him, of course. He just didn’t bother to do anything about it.
You sat on the swing right next to the one he was occupying, lightly swinging back and forth, letting the silence besides the creaks and jingling of chains envelope you both.
“Didn’t want a hectic Christmas?” You asked, basking at the cold breeze of the park.
Usually, Kusuo wouldn’t respond to a question at all, if he deemed it no importance. And this question wasn’t important, but..
Yes, he replied. Telepathically, like always.
It was different when it was you. It always was. For some reason, you were an exception.
It wasn’t always like that, obviously. Once upon a time, just like the rest of the idiots that chose to follow him around, he didn’t respond to you besides a simple nod whenever you talked to him. And he had been fine with that. To him, you were just another idiot who proclaimed to be his friend.
Then suddenly, something changed. You began observing, became understanding. You noticed his struggle and desire to leave social events. You made up excuses for him, got him out of situations. When you talked to him, you were more quiet to not attract attention like you usually did since you were often loud.
It was surprising, to say the least. He didn’t warm up to you, but he tolerated you more, began responding. It was pleasant to know someone took a notice to his internal conflict and decided to help him out.
It was like you took those days and days of being around Kusuo to analyze him and find out what made him uncomfortable and what didn’t. It was no easy feat, probably. Analyzing a person who didn’t show a lot of emotion if not none at all was difficult. How would you know someone was annoyed if all they did was sit and stare blankly?
But you had been determined. Kusuo didn’t push you away or talk over you, he remembered things you mention as if reassuring you that he was listening, and those were the sole reasons why you wanted to stick around him. He was one of the people you respected the most, and you didn’t want to be a pain to him.
Unbeknownst to you, Kusuo knew of your efforts to make him more comfortable around you. It was a nice change, but shocking, nonetheless.
He was.. thankful. Grateful. Usually people who acted the way you did would have motives he didn’t agree with, like wanting to have his affections, wanting him to worship the ground they walked on, but your only motive was wanting a friend who listened. All you wanted was someone who wouldn’t talk over your voice as if what you had to say was of no importance, someone who remembered small things about you and let you know they weren’t ignoring you.
He could deal with that. He would do that, for you. It’s the least he could do for all your efforts. It’s the least he could do for the rare person that had a true heart.
Y/n, he called you, turning to face you.
You stop swinging, turning to face him as well, tilting your head in question.
“Thank you.”
It’s rather monotonous like he usually sounded, but something was different. It sounded more clear, a bit louder, as if you were truly hearing him for the first time.
You smile, confused. “For what?”
The barest hint of a returned smile, and Kusuo turns back to face forward, starting to swing.
You shrug, and start swinging right along with him.
